It's skunk mating season in Kansas and that means skunks are on the move. Striped skunks are classified as furbearing animals and the established hunting and trapping season for Striped skunks closed on February 28th. Eastern spotted skunks are designated as a threatened species. A threatened or endangered species taken during established trapping seasons, or other lawful activity shall not be unlawfully taken if immediately released.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office assists in a capital murder investigation. On Tuesday at around 11:30am, the Sheriff’s Office received an alert from one of their license plate readers regarding a vehicle wanted in connection with a capital murder case in Hidalgo County, Texas. The vehicle was traveling through the county on Highway 169. Deputies, with assistance from the Cherryvale Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol, successfully located the vehicle.

A wanted man leads deputies on a high-speed chase before crashing his vehicle. A Labette County Sheriff's deputy observed a tan Ford F-150 run a stop sign at a high rate of speed. After seeing the deputy the driver attempted to lose him and even drove through a field. The driver reached speeds over 100mph and ran four motorists off the road. The suspect slammed on their brakes, causing the deputy to sideswipe the suspect’s vehicle. Then sped up attempting to ram the deputy’s vehicle.

Coffeyville is rolling out the purple and gold for Alumni Weekend, February 21st through the 23rd. The Coffeyville Alumni Association is encouraging all local businesses to decorate their storefronts in purple and gold, school memorabilia and Coffeyville pride to welcome alumni back home. They're hosting a Business Decorating Contest, with the winning business receiving a $100 credit on their City of Coffeyville electric bill. The deadline to have a business decorated is February 18th.

Coffeyville Community College is offering a community square dancing class and it starts this week. Director of Marketing Ashley Tatman says the first class is on Thursday. Tatman says at the end of the semester the class will end with an event in Tulsa. Tatman says anyone interested in enrolling in the class or for any information about the class can email or call the instructor, Vivian Frost. Her email is [email protected].
