May 25 is a notable and special day in the rich history of Liverpool Football Club. It was the day that the Reds won their first European Cup, in Rome in 1977, and more recently it became known as ‘Istanbul Day’ after the miracle of 2005. May 25 2025 has now entered the history books as the day Liverpool supporters, many of them for the first time, watched their team lift aloft the Premier League trophy at Anfield, ending a 35-year wait for fans to witness their side celebrating the title.

As media, quite often you attend a match with an idea of what angle you’ll be writing about post-match and sometimes the events of the match dictate the angle. At Anfield on Sunday it was both, as the party mood in the stands turned sour by the introduction of Trent Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool fans, with the sun again making for a perfect day on Merseyside, extended their party from Tottenham two weeks ago.

When Liverpool fans last celebrated the title at Anfield, it was regarded as a pretty run-of-the-mill occasion; after all, eight titles in 12 years can create a sense of expectation. “It felt as if that was something we achieved every single year, so I think we took it for granted,” club statistician Ged Rea tells FourFourTwo.

If you listen to some supporters and media, this is one of the lowest-quality Premier League seasons in its 33 years. Those people would be completely wrong. This is a Premier League that has five teams in the quarter-finals of European competitions and has already secured an extra spot in next season’s Champions League courtesy of English team’s performances in Europe. The second-placed Premier League side, Arsenal, are currently 3-0 up on aggregate against Real Madrid.

Fewer than 12 hours after his post-Everton press conference that Arne Slot sat down to preview Liverpool’s next game against Fulham. It was no surprise, then, that much of the focus was on the events of the night before in the Premier League rather than a match that takes place over three days after the press conference to preview it. Slot’s business-like approach means he’s more focused on an extra day off in the build-up than neatly spacing out media duties.
