Tomorrow marks 80 years since VE Day - which stands for ‘Victory in Europe’ Day - the day when the German armed forces signed an unconditional surrender, and began the process of bringing the Second World War to an end after nearly six years. On May 8, 1945, millions of people rejoiced at the news, although the war against Japan would continue until VJ day that August, and since then, VE Day has been marked annually on May 8 across Europe.

One mum who witnessed the incident with her two children called it "truly terrifying."Terrified children were escorted from a cricket pitch in tears after a gang of youths armed with "knives, hammers and a garden spade" gathered for a mass brawl. Terror unfolded as around 50 children, aged nine to 13, were waiting to start their junior practice session at Maghull Cricket Club in Liverpool on May 3. A number of youths then congregated on the pitch and "engaged in organised fighting".

Police have closed a main road in Bootle this afternoon following a crash. Several police vehicles and ambulances are at the scene of the incident on Bailey Drive. Merseyside Police confirmed the crash involved a white Ford Focus and a DAF truck. Police, fire and paramedics are all at the scene and Bailey Drive is currently closed while emergency services deal with the incident. It is currently unclear if there are any injuries at this stage, police said.

Police and forensics have descended onto a road in Kirkby this evening following an incident. Police and paramedics are currently at the scene on Whitefield Drive in the town. A large cordon is in place on the road, with The Johnny Todd pub and a Go Local store both inside the cordon. Photos taken at the scene show detectives and forensics inside the Go Local store carry out their investigations. A police helicopter can also be seen circling overhead.
