Villa transfer chief Monchi is a target for the consortium trying to buy his former club Sevilla. The Spanish outfit are currently the subject of a takeover bid and one of the investors, Fede Quintero, has gone public with his ambition to bring Monchi back for a third spell at the club. Unai Emery was able to convince Monchi to end his second stint two years ago and take the role of president of football operations at Villa, where he has a major say in transfer policy.

Albion winger Tom Fellows has sights set on helping England to glory against Spain after making his European under-21 Championship bow. Fellows came off the bench in the second half of Wednesday’s 2-1 group stage defeat to Germany in Slovakia for his first action of the tournament. The Young Lions were two goals down when Baggies ace entered the fray in the 64th minute but while Bournemouth’s Alex Scott found the net to reduce the deficit, they were unable to find a leveller in the closing stages.

Villa star Morgan Rogers has been shortlisted for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award. The Halesowen-born ace is on a six-man list for the prize, after his superb season was recognised by his fellow professionals. Rogers scored 14 goals and set up 15 more for Unai Emery’s team in all competitions as they enjoyed a strong campaign in the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.

Albion are tracking Ajax centre-back Jakov Medic as they seek defensive reinforcements this summer. The 26-year-old Croat is reported to be on the club’s shortlist, though they would face competition from Championship rivals Norwich over any move. Medic joined Ajax from St Pauli two years ago but has made just nine appearances for the Dutch giants and spent last season back in Germany, on loan with VFL Bochum.

The La Liga outfit will visit The Hawthorns on Saturday, August 2 (kick-off 1pm) for what will be the final warm-up fixture for Ryan Mason’s men ahead of the new Championship season. Albion had already confirmed friendly matches against Blackpool and Lincoln City next month. But it is the clash with Rayo, just a week before the new league season begins, which will represent by far the toughest test.
