November has finally delivered some reasonable drilling conditions, and with hindsight waiting another week would have been even better. This year, I have tried to simplify my system further and take out risk by only growing Group 4 hard varieties. I have achieved milling spec over the past few years, but harvest logistics, storage and the added costs have steered me towards the simplification.

I’ve been racking my brain to think of some positive things to talk about this month, so far, the best I can come up with is that at least the rain is warm at the moment. Grain maize is almost ready for harvest, but given the late drilling of some fields and weather, I’m sure that it will drag on for a few months. The crop looks promising, and I am excited to get the combine into it, and compare the end results to other break crops. I am a bit nervous about the amount that will need drying.

We have been very lucky around here that, on the whole, harvest has been relatively easy, with few wet days and everything harvested dry. A small consolation for the amount of ergot in samples and mostly below average yields. Yet again Extase has failed to impress, with Dawsum and Champion both easily outyielding it with a fairly equal input spend. The only winner from Extase is that some of it has hit milling spec, which will at least cover the cost of cleaning the ergot out of it.

Matt Redman © Tim Scrivener It has been a challenge to be enthusiastic about starting harvest this year. Whether that is because crops haven’t looked great, the weather was fairly unsettled (although it has improved), or early reports on yields weren’t great, I am not sure. One thing is for certain though, it is painful harvesting crops at, or below, what it has cost to grow them, while also paying invoices for repairs or inputs that have continued to increase.

Matt Redman © Tim Scrivener By the time you read this we could have a new government, with the added uncertainty and challenges that brings, although it’s questionable whether a change is a good or bad thing with no party really excelling and standing out as the best option at the moment. As an industry we need stability to enable confidence to invest in the future, we can’t afford to sit still and wait.
