You wake up inside a dilapidated warehouse in a pool of your own blood and with a pounding headache. Across the room is a buzzing television set and a ringing cell phone. After answering the phone, an ominous caller explains the source of your cranial pain. A bomb’s been drilled inside your skull, and you’re now at the mercy of the mysterious voice on the other end of the call. Your first task? Get through the warehouse and get comfortable killing strangers.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 did a real number on the discourse surrounding turn-based RPGs, huh? Overnight, Gamers collectively realized they’ve been neglecting the actual cool kids at the table all along. This is, undoubtedly, due partly to Expedition 33‘s dodge’n’parry approach to turn-based combat, which has garnered swaths of new players who likely would’ve never touched the game otherwise. I get it – parrying is awesome, and I’d argue it makes just about every game mechanically better.

Back in my day, we would launch games from cold, black screens with white text and command prompts. CD-ROM games were becoming the standard, but before then, you’d pop a floppy disk into your A:\ drive, hope it recognizes it, and get to fragging. Ah, the good ol’ days. John Romero, legendary creator of the DOOM series and co-founder of id Software, is keeping that dream (nightmare?) alive.

2D platformers are burned into my soul and mind. I’ve been playing them since I was a little kid, and I’ve always found them to be some of my favorites to dive into. Even when I had my “I’m too cool for platformers” phase in my teenage years, I found myself gravitating back to them as I got older. For good reason, too. They’re simple to play and provide some of the most gratifying gameplay around.

I’ve always wanted to be fully immersed in cs_assault. No, maybe de_aztec. Yeah, definitely Aztec. Pretty soon, that’s gonna be a reality! Team Beef, a group of lads known for porting various boomer shooters to VR headsets, is setting its sights on Counter-Strike 1.6. While there’s no set release date just yet, a new trailer notes that it’s coming soon. ‘Counter-Strike’ in VR? Now that’s a clutch.

#Expedition33 can't be the new turn base style for other games because it rewards skill, timing, and power fantasy aggressive play. 🤣🤣 of course from Vice. "it neglects one of the main tenets, Taking damage is part of the process" https://t.co/97J4MHK1hq
