Following a lengthy investigation into its bus driver shortage and transportation challenges, Rapid City Area Schools revealed its findings and solutions at a recent school board meeting. District Chief Financial Officer Coy Sasse said one of the key changes will be reducing the number of bus stops available. The current number of bus stops is 467; the proposed number is 359.

As her black Chevy Tahoe slithered around hairpin turns toward Pine Ridge Reservation, Sarah White reflected on how a $100,000 grant from the Boulder Fund will help the South Dakota Education Equity Coalition continue is work improving the lives of Indigenous youth. White, Oglala Lakota, founded the nonprofit in 2019 to help improve graduation and job rates for Indigenous students through increased support and opportunity.

Despite initially providing voters in Summerset with the wrong polling place, Rapid City Area Schools' Area 6 incumbent Jamie Clapham appears to have narrowly defeated challenger Brian Johnson 546-543 to retain her seat. Similar to Clapham, Johnson said he told Summerset voters to cast their ballots at Summerset City Hall, rather than Blackhawk Fire Station, which is 2.7 miles away.

Rapid City Area Schools Area 6 candidates Jamie Clapham and Brian Johnson said a miscommunication for voters in the Summerset area of Meade County could have an impact on the election results. Entering Tuesday's voting day, Clapham and Johnson both notified Summerset residents on the campaign trail their polling place would be Summerset City Hall. This is where voters have traditionally cast a ballot, both candidates said.

Rapid City residents are going to the polls today to vote for members of the Rapid City Area Schools Board of Education and Rapid City Common Council. For City Council, there are contested races in Ward 1, Ward 4 and Ward 5. For school board, candidates face off in Area 3 and Area 6. Canyon Lake Activity CenterPoll workers at Canyon Lake Activity Center said the voter turnout was low but slowly picking up as the day progresses.

A South Dakota School of Mines international alum recently requested a federal judge put further protections in place to prevent deportation. Priya Saxena of India, who earned a doctorate from the school this month, received a preliminary injunction May 15 and is now seeking a permanent injunction against the government. Her attorney, Rapid City's Jim Leach, argued in court documents the hearing for a preliminary injunction proved why Saxena is entitled to the permanent injunction.

Stevens alum Simeon Birnbaum took one step closer to becoming the school's first-ever Division I All-American in track and field by finishing first in the NCAA West Region semifinal 1500 with a time of 3:39.79. Birnbaum, who's now running for Oregon, can clinch the accomplishment by finishing in the top-eight in the 1500 in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. which begins Wednesday, June 11 and ends Sunday, June 14.
