In March 2023, I stepped into a soup kitchen in Hempstead for the first time, hoping that some volunteer work would be a revitalizing breath of fresh air from the typical rhythm of college life. Only one year later, I visited the Long Island Ethical Humanist Society to receive our nation’s highest federal volunteer service award: the gold-level President’s Volunteer Service Award, given for 250 hours of volunteer service within a one-year time period.

Democrats were understandably elated when former Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi won the special election in New York’s 3rd Congressional District on Feb. 13, but they shouldn’t be popping any champagne. In truth, Suozzi’s victory over the Republicans’ candidate, Mazi Melesa Pilip, was a lot closer than it should have been. Suozzi won just under 54 percent of the vote. Doesn’t that seem a little low?

The school repeatedly produces numerous National Merit Scholars and high SAT scores. For the class of 2023, the school had a whopping 15 valedictorians. Just three miles away is Westbury High School.

By Matthew AdarichevOn May 23rd, the Nassau County Legislature voted 17-1 to lease the area of the Nassau Hub to the Las Vegas Sands Corporation for 99 years. The Sands Corporation is expected to develop a casino (or, in politically correct terminology, an “entertainment complex”) on the land. I want to thank Democratic Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton for being the sole voice of reason in the Legislature.
