Yet, looking at the nominations for the 2024 Academy Awards, there is a far less optimistic idea that sits at the heart of many of the year’s most acclaimed films.

The Holdovers (2023), the latest effort from Alexander Payne, is a film which seems to have been constructed with that certain compulsion in mind, positioning itself as a classic of the late 20th century, which we all collectively managed to miss out on until the 21st.
