BY Matthew Hollett You can find such surprising and funny things while digging through archives. The Pilote de Terre-Neuve, published in 1869, is full of dollhouse-like illustrations of Newfoundland’s coastline, complete with tiny ships and houses. I also came across a sea captain’s letter to his daughter, in which he describes “seven little gulls recently hatched” that he is attempting to raise.

I live downtown St John’s and usually serve coffee somewhere while I write and work at the university. I climb Signal Hill every day and play drums and bass in bands with my friends!One short fiction how-to is to get the reader quickly into the situation, but I was really struck by your situations – the protagonist who answered the help line for IKEA, for example.

BY Matthew Hollett When I signed up for my first photography class in art school, my dad rummaged around in the basement and placed a heavy leather case in my hands. I unbuckled it to find his old 35mm camera, a Zenit EM. It had an enormous dent above the lens, as if it had deflected a bullet, and its selenium light meter, mysteriously, did not require batteries.

Did you grow up in a musical household? I grew up in a very musical household. My Dad was a great singer, and my Mother played piano a little. I have five sisters and a brother, and we all were in piano lessons and played another instrument. In fact, we had a family music group called “The Brennan Family” (lead by my Aunt Bridie) and we would perform on benefit concerts, at conferences, and at old-folks homes. Five of my brothers and sisters chose music as a profession.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? I’m a writer and photographer in St John’s. My background is in visual arts, and my writing is often very visual – I’ve published essays of writing and photos, and I enjoy writing in response to images. My poetry book Optic Nerve has just been published by Brick Books – an earlier version of it also won the NLCU Fresh Fish Award a few years back.
