I love Albury Silent Pool Organic Rosé. I was fortunate to taste a bottle of the 2024 which will be released around the time that this column is published. I wrote a note on it, and the 2020 Prestige Cuvée Sparkler in my weekly Wednesday Wines column on my website. As you know, I always include stockist and retail pricing with all my write-ups not least because these musings are intended to move stock into wine lovers’ homes.

2024 Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac, Bordeaux Description 52% Cabernet Sauvignon; 43% Merlot; 1% Cabernet Franc; 1% Petit Verdot. This was a demanding year in the vineyard, but the wine itself has a breezy affability. The bouquet is of fresh plum and the palate displays a surprising viscosity – not cooked but certainly ripe. No SO2 is used during the élevage, so all the red-fruit notes are very overt.

When we first put my alcohol-free brand, Jukes, into cans, we wanted an up-market expression to use while talking about our cans. We landed on Ready-to-Pour or RTP. Of course, Ready-to-Drink had already been commandeered by fast-moving fizzy pop and the like.

Around twenty years ago, I was on tour in the Adelaide Hills when a great friend opened a pair of wines for me to taste. Both were superb – one leaner and zestier and the other ripe, rich and lusty. The first was not a Sauvignon Blanc, and the second was not a Chardonnay. They were both made from the same grape, a grape that has, apparently, 150 synonyms.

Time flies. It really does. It was a huge honour to be asked to write for the inaugural edition of this brilliant magazine, and I jumped at the chance to be given free rein to expound about the finest-tasting English and Welsh wines over a double-page spread each month. I don’t think this privilege exists anywhere else in the country.

I think the forty-quid mark is make or break for elite sparkling wines during the festive season, and I have found three spectacular candidates for your perusal and enjoyment this year. It’s worth spending five minutes searching the internet for prices of familiar rosé Champagnes to see that most famous brands now reside around the £60-mark. This makes £40 a failsafe target, giving our best wines a rock-solid chance to nudge French wines aside and step up to the plate (literally) this Christmas.

This month, my theme is purity. While I adore complex, multilayered, orchestral wines, and I am sure everyone agrees these are bombastic, invigorating and packed with excitement, a slender category of wines sing a solo tune and the purer, the better. These wines stop you in their tracks with their singular directness and precision. You might think that genuinely pure wines can only be made from skinny, lean white grapes; this is only partly true.

People are excited about the potential of programs focused on children’s social and emotional learning (SEL). At the least, they can make learning a more engaging and enjoyable experience for children. But, do we know how and if SEL programs work, especially across the diverse economic, ethnic and cultural contexts that constitute low- or middle-income countries (LMICs)? The enthusiasm for SEL programs has galloped ahead of the evidence.

Three wines inspire this story in this month’s column. A few others could probably join this trio, but these three epitomise my resounding theme. They do it with unwavering commitment, unshakable confidence, and unfathomable persistence, and they don’t need any support from the cheap seats. Sam Lindo bounded up to me at the WineGB tasting, thrusting a glass of red wine in my hand.

When I assemble a wine lineup for a corporate event, I always keep in mind the diverse palate of the audience. I start with some classic styles and then add a couple of curve balls for that element of surprise. There are always a few quiet wine experts in the crowd who deserve to be wowed by new and fascinating flavours as much as genuine amateurs. The ‘complex white blend’ is my go-to white wine style to elicit wonder and amazement. I usually head straight to Italy.
