    When we first put my alcohol-free brand, Jukes, into cans, we wanted an up-market expression to use while talking about our cans. We landed on Ready-to-Pour or RTP. Of course, Ready-to-Drink had already been commandeered by fast-moving fizzy pop and the like.

    Around twenty years ago, I was on tour in the Adelaide Hills when a great friend opened a pair of wines for me to taste. Both were superb – one leaner and zestier and the other ripe, rich and lusty. The first was not a Sauvignon Blanc, and the second was not a Chardonnay. They were both made from the same grape, a grape that has, apparently, 150 synonyms.

    Time flies. It really does. It was a huge honour to be asked to write for the inaugural edition of this brilliant magazine, and I jumped at the chance to be given free rein to expound about the finest-tasting English and Welsh wines over a double-page spread each month. I don’t think this privilege exists anywhere else in the country.

    I think the forty-quid mark is make or break for elite sparkling wines during the festive season, and I have found three spectacular candidates for your perusal and enjoyment this year. It’s worth spending five minutes searching the internet for prices of familiar rosé Champagnes to see that most famous brands now reside around the £60-mark. This makes £40 a failsafe target, giving our best wines a rock-solid chance to nudge French wines aside and step up to the plate (literally) this Christmas.

    This month, my theme is purity. While I adore complex, multilayered, orchestral wines, and I am sure everyone agrees these are bombastic, invigorating and packed with excitement, a slender category of wines sing a solo tune and the purer, the better. These wines stop you in their tracks with their singular directness and precision. You might think that genuinely pure wines can only be made from skinny, lean white grapes; this is only partly true.
