First, the good news: Nearly six weeks after Germany went to the polls, the country’s once dominant centrist parties – the centre-right Christian Democrats and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) – have sealed a coalition agreement. The bad news is that it will be another month before a new government, presumably under centre-right leader Friedrich Merz, takes power. As any of the participants would be happy to explain, there are myriad important reasons for this.

Donald Trump wouldn’t approve. Just days after a board member of Axel Springer, Politico’s German parent, accused the outlet of “bad journalism” and its journalists of being “woke”, the company confirmed that the director – Argentine entrepreneur Martín Varsavsky – was leaving the board (as first reported by Euractiv’s The Chattering Classes) after more than a decade.
