Three Mustang wrestlers clinched NCAA championship berths led by No. 20 Trevor Tinker, who won his first career heavyweight title at the Pac-12 Championships. The Mustangs travelled to Corvallis, Oregon, where Tinker, No. 9 133-pound junior Zeth Romney and No. 9 149-pound redshirt junior Chance Lamer punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships starting on March 20.

Corvallis, Ore. – The Pac-12 Championship semifinal matches have come to a close, and Cal Poly will be well-represented in the finals after the first round of bouts. Five Mustangs won their individual matches, with No. 2 seeds Zeth Romney at 133 pounds and Chance Lamer at 149 pounds securing bids to the NCAA championships. “I think our effort’s been outstanding,” Head Coach Jon Sioredas said.

The Mustangs ended their season with a 5-9 dual record, but with a strong tournament team and a record of individual success this season, Cal Poly is fighting for titles at several weights.

There are two signs hanging in the Cal Poly Men’s Soccer locker room inside Spanos Stadium. One reads “intensity,” and the other, “hard work.” The Mustangs lived by those words in 2024 and an all-in approach to the game of soccer that left no other option but success. These principles are head coach Oige Kennedy’s north star. When he entered the program just after the 2022 season, Kennedy quickly began making changes to the Mustangs’ roster and the team’s mentality.

Cal Poly Wrestling sent 14 wrestlers to the University of Northern Iowa’s UNI-Dome to compete in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I National Dual Meet Championships on Jan. 10 and 11. It was the Mustangs’ first dual meet action since Dec. 19, when they took losses to Cal Baptist and Northwestern at home. After going 1-2 on day one, the team picked up momentum, netting two victories on day two over Ohio (30-16) and Sacred Heart (31-12).

Cal Poly Wrestling sent seven wrestlers to compete at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships tournament from Sunday, Dec. 29 through Monday, Dec. 30 at NOW Arena. Intermat’s 20th-ranked tournament team placed 23rd at the Midlands with 12.5 total team points. Cal Poly is looking to build on the momentum from last year’s Ken Kraft competition, in which they had a program-record three placing wrestlers and a program second-best 13th-ranked finish.

For the first time in a decade, sophomore defender Parker Owens and junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune earned first-team All-Far West Region selections from United Soccer Coaches. McCune and Owens are the program’s only USC first-team selections since 2014 when midfielder Chase Minter earned the USC honors.

In a back-and-forth battle, Cal Poly Men’s Basketball fell short 80-66 to Saint Mary’s on Saturday at the University Credit Union Pavilion. Graduate swingman Owen Koonce and guard Mac Riniker led the Mustangs (3-4) in points with 16 and 15, respectively. It was a tough shooting night against the Gaels (6-0) as Cal Poly shot only 39.7% from the field and 32% from three. Riniker also led the team in assists with five, while Koonce went 7-of-11 from the field.

Just outside the Orfalea College of Business building, the smell of barbecue and the sound of hundreds of Cal Poly wrestling fans and alumni filled the air for their dual against No. 14 Stanford. The Mustangs (0-2) hosted the Cardinal (4-1) in the outdoor dual as part of their Alumni and Supporters Weekend, which has run throughout the last two days and has featured a golf fundraiser and alumni dinner for wrestlers from Cal Poly’s storied past to enjoy.

After 110 minutes of open play and a scoreline tied at one apiece, UC Davis ended the Cal Poly Men’s Soccer’s season on Sunday at Mustang Memorial Field. It was the only loss the Green and Gold suffered at home all season. The back-and-forth affair ended 5-4 in favor of the fourth-seeded Aggies (9-5-6, 4-3-2 Big West) on penalties, with a save from UC Davis goalkeeper Mekhai Wilson on junior forward Conner Lisenbee shutting down the top-seeded Mustangs (7-4-8, 4-1-4 Big West).
