    Eight days into her tenure as a Cal Poly swim and dive captain, Jen Reiter walked into Fisher Science Building’s lecture hall fearing the worst. All 57 teammates filed in just a few minutes before 7:30 a.m., awaiting Cal Poly Athletic Director Don Oberhelman. Less than 24 hours earlier, the team was notified via email that their morning practice would be canceled. There was no warning or explanation. On a normal morning, they would have been in the waters of the Anderson Aquatic Center.

    Out of four wrestlers competing in the first two days of the NCAA Championships, Zeth Romney is the last man standing. He led the way for Cal Poly, becoming its first All-American at 133-pounds in 15 years. The last time the Mustangs had an All-American at the weight class was Boris Novachkov back in 2010. No. 4 seeded Romney went 2-0 on Thursday, March 20 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. He then secured All-American honors and a spot in the semifinals with a Friday morning win.

    Cal Poly Wrestling played host to Northern Illinois University and No. 15 Little Rock in a Valentine’s Day doubleheader on Feb. 14, coming up short in both duals at Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs (4-9, 0-2 Pac-12) struggled for position all night long, falling behind early on in both duals and losing to the Huskies (6-3, 5-1 MAC) 25-19 and the Trojans (16-3, 2-0 Pac-12) 25-14.

    Cal Poly Wrestling sent seven wrestlers to compete at the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships tournament from Sunday, Dec. 29 through Monday, Dec. 30 at NOW Arena. Intermat’s 20th-ranked tournament team placed 23rd at the Midlands with 12.5 total team points. Cal Poly is looking to build on the momentum from last year’s Ken Kraft competition, in which they had a program-record three placing wrestlers and a program second-best 13th-ranked finish.

    Cal Poly Wrestling was handled by California Baptist, 22-16, before also falling against Northwestern, 29-14, Thursday at Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs (0-4) started hot against the Lancers (5-2, 2-0 Big 12) and Wildcats (2-1) thanks to 125-pound redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman. Still, they couldn’t get much going outside of that and redshirt junior heavyweight Trevor Tinker’s performance.
