There are no bad ideas in a brainstorm. Especially those that come at the beginning of a global pandemic. COVID-19 shuttered restaurants starting in March 2020, and Austin chefs Laurie Ziminski and Victor Sandoval, like most of their peers, found themselves at home considering the futures they wanted to create for themselves. Gone were the late nights and 60-hour work weeks at Jeffrey’s and Il Brutto, respectively. In their place, something new: hobbies and spare time to envision a brand-new life.

Two of Central Texas’ biggest celebrations of food and the people who bring it to our tables take place in the coming weeks in Austin. Hot Luck, the festival co-founded by barbecue legend Aaron Franklin, will welcome chefs from across the country over Memorial Day weekend; and Field Guide Festival, which pairs local farms and chefs, will roll out its fifth year of programming in late April.

The fires went out briefly at the original Green Mesquite on Barton Springs Road last week and were extinguished permanently at the Southpark Meadows location of the Austin institution. The landlord posted a lockout notice on the Barton Springs restaurant that Tom Davis has owned and operated since 1988. The lights were not out long. Director of operations Joe Reese, who has worked at Green Mesquite since 1988, partnered with three co-workers to take over control of the business.

Uptown, which sells several great po' boys, including a crackling fried shrimp, juicy roast beef and vegetarian fried green tomato, will welcome chefs from several great spots around town for a po' boy throwdown.
