Reversing speed cuts: Govt’s wheels in motion to remove blanket limits

Blanket speed limit reductions will be reversed by July 2025 under the coalition Government and this could result in increases on some Gisborne roads. The draft Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024 proposes to reverse speed limit reductions made since January 2020 on local roads where limits have been reduced to 30km/h, and on arterial roads.

Minister for Emergency Management and Recovery Mark Mitchell announced $100,000 for the Tairāwhiti Mayoral Relief Fund this afternoon. It is part of $300,000 total funding for Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay and Tairāwhiti. Mayor Rehette Stoltz said the funding was hugely appreciated. “It’s been a rough few days for our region. A mural design by two Gisborne Boys’ High students that judges say captures the culture and positive energy of the skatepark has won a competition in celebration of Youth Week. Barnardos Aotearoa and the Violence Free Tairāwhiti Network (VFTN) announced the winners of their youth mural competition, Āta Whakarongo (Be Heard), at a vibrant community event at the Gisborne skatepark on Friday afternoon.

Re: Stop trial, return funds - May 22 letter. My thoughts exactly. We run a business on Grey St and not once have we received any information from the GDC, nor have we been asked for our opinion on the new changes. Surely it would make sense to get an idea of what people working every day in the area think before implementing such extreme modifications. Having one of the main arterial roadways in Gisborne now made so narrow and hard to navigate is a disaster waiting to happen.

As a resident of Makaraka since 1981, I respond to Mr J. Marshall regarding his promotion of a footpath/cycleway along the disused rail line out to Makaraka. Aside from land ownership and other issues, there is no demand or need for a footpath/cycleway to Makaraka. I do not believe householders along the railway line would appreciate opening up access to the back of their properties.

Several disturbing items in the news on Wednesday. 1. A Singapore Airlines flight with 23 Kiwi passengers hit severe turbulence over the Indian Ocean, resulting in one dead British passenger and 71 others injured. Research suggests severe turbulence in jet streams could double or even triple in coming decades if the climate continues to change as expected. 2. Shut up Simin. I’m sick of you exhorting us all to use fossil fuels and drive everywhere. Last week I took my life in my hands, wheeling my bike across Roebuck Road. It shouldn’t be that dangerous!If only Gisborne had an industrial/heavy traffic by-pass, cyclists, pedestrians and school children wouldn’t be so intimidated by encounters of a close and personal nature with 50 tonne truck and trailer units. Recently a cyclist friend of mine had her arm broken twice by inconsiderate round-about traffic.
