SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Police Department issued a Shelter in Place Warning beginning at 7:01a.m. and ending at 9:01 a.m., for what police dispatch says was a 911 call made for an incident near Tallman and Rich Streets. According to police dispatch audio, a caller notified the Syracuse Police Department shortly after 3:30 a.m. that a man pulled a handgun on him, cocked the gun and threatened to shoot him. Police responded to the call immediately.

MARCY, N.Y. — The Department of Justice announced Wednesday that three prison guards at Mid-State Correctional Facility have pleaded guilty to violation of rights under the color of law for an assault on an inmate in April of 2023. The Department of Justice said Brandon Montanari, 34, Rohail Kahn, 28, and Michael Williams, 38, have each pleaded guilty to depriving an inmate at Mid-State Correctional Facility of his rights under color of law.

An 11-count indictment unsealed in Oneida County Court accuses two Mid-State Corrections Officers of murder in the second degree in connection with the beating death of inmate Messiah Nantwi. The indictment also outlines the multiple steps the state says corrections officers took to cover up their alleged actions. According to the indictment, corrections officers Jonah Levi and Caleb Blair caused the death of Nantwi. He was 22-years-old.
