Hello, Nick. You launched this magazine 45 years ago, using your own savings, and now photographs from it have been gathered for an exhibition, Culture Shift, at London’s National Portrait Gallery. What would 32-year-old Nick have made of that? Well, I wouldn’t have believed that possible. I certainly thought it was going to be collectable – to the extent of burrowing away three or four bundles of the first issue, sticking them in the garage and thinking “that can be the pension”.

The Client and Project Brief:Sakti Women is a feminist organisation that helps women have an outlet for their past traumas and fears by running workshops, social events and multiple creative events to express themselves as women. The exhibition being put on aims to celebrate womanhood, through theatrical performances, books and various art pieces.
Writing is a type of design. However, I do not accept it.

We like The Fence here at THE FACE. Partly because the London-based quarterly launched around the same time we did in 2019. Partly because our names sound a bit similar. But mostly because it’s a proper hoot: wry and irreverent, a little bit snide, but usually towards the right people. It publishes features with weight and substance, like “Inside the scandal that shook the Church of England”, then follows them up by asking one of Rizzle Kicks why headbutting isn’t more popular.

Well, that went quick didn’t it? THE FACE relaunched digitally in April 2019, which makes us five years old this month. Back then, Theresa May was prime minister, Old Town Road was number one and Corona was a popular Mexican beer, rather than epoch defining virus. When we set out, we didn’t want to be another trendy magazine covering things that you only ever see in the pages or websites of other trendy magazines.
