NEW YORK — The Yankees have four starter-caliber outfielders on their active roster and all of them deserve consistent playing time. It’s a situation that creates what manager Aaron Boone recently referred to as a “puzzle” and it’s a “little bit of a challenge” when deciding who is starting every game. “You’re just trying to balance, as best you can, a little bit of the matchup thing,” Boone said, explaining how he makes his lineup decisions.

NEW YORK — After giving up three runs in an eighth-inning implosion against the Padres on Monday night, Yankees reliever Devin Williams insisted that he feels good and that he’s turned a corner from the struggles he had in March and April. Williams backed that up in his next appearance, stepping up in a huge spot in Wednesday night’s win over San Diego. He earned his first win in a Yankees uniform, soaking up a feeling on the mound that he’s been chasing all season long.

The Yankees had a zero in the hit column until one out in the seventh inning. Less than 24 hours removed from their biggest single-inning outburst in almost a decade, they were completely overmatched by Padres right-hander Dylan Cease.

NEW YORK — When Yankees manager Aaron Boone thinks of Jonathan Loáisiga at his best, he goes back to the 2022 postseason. In that playoff run, where the Yankees ultimately got swept by the Astros in the American League Championship Series, Loáisiga gave up only one earned run across 9 1/3 innings. Just in the Division Series alone, against Cleveland, Loáisiga pitched in four of the Yankees’ five games, tossing five scoreless innings with six hits, zero walks and three strikeouts.
