    SPARTANBURG — Since 2020, every municipality in Spartanburg County has seen its population grow by at least 10 percent, except one. The city of Spartanburg’s population has grown by 2 percent from 2020 to 2024. All 12 neighboring municipalities in the county have significantly outpaced its population growth. The county’s overall population has grown by 13 percent in the same time. Greer has grown by 31 percent since 2020, adding more than 10,000 residents in just four years.

    GREENVILLE — Some South Carolina cities are reimagining their downtowns, kicking cars out and inviting visitors to stroll the empty lanes instead. Cities like Charleston, Spartanburg, Fountain Inn and Laurens have temporarily or permanently created pedestrian plazas by shutting down streets and parking areas in their commercial districts. Greenville, which has long prided itself on its walkable features, just recently started experimenting with keeping its Main Street closed on weekends.

    SPARTANBURG — After Spartanburg County’s sheriff and a county councilman resigned, two partisan special elections are set for later this year. Spartanburg County voters will head to the ballot box on Nov. 4 to elect someone to replace former Sheriff Chuck Wright and former County Councilman David Britt of District 3. Regularly scheduled nonpartisan school board and municipal elections are on the same day.

    GREER — An Alabama-based fast-casual chicken finger chain has expanded to the Upstate. Guthrie’s Chicken Fingers opened its second South Carolina location on May 28 at 1308 W. Wade Hampton Blvd. in Greer. The chain opened its first restaurant in the state in Lexington County in April and plans to expand across the Midlands.
