Things used in this project ×1×1×1ObjectivesThe objective of the project was to write code to allow a robot to navigate a wooden obstacle course and pick up different colored balls. Different groups competed against each other in a contest, scored based on the speed of completing the course and the amount of balls picked up, as well as the ability to avoid obstacles. StrategyThe group was provided with a premade robot and starter code.

I grew up in a very academically competitive school where grades were the not-so-hidden comparators that pitted classmates against one another. But when I entered the workforce with a summer internship, I realized how uncorrelated grades are with one’s real-world capability. At U of T, the culture around grades fosters unhealthy, unnecessary competition that I believe is one of the biggest contributors to poor student mental health.

If I had enrolled in my local state university back in the US, I would have moved a mere 20-minute drive away. Still, the convenience of living on campus would have won me over, as the holistic and lively campus experience would have justified the price of the dorm for me. Students of the GTA are not so lucky as to be able to choose between the two convenient and attractive options I was presented with.
