    After a spring semester that saw mass protests and encampments at universities across the country in response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, students and faculty of the California State University system received an email last week outlining on-campus protest guidelines.  “Institutions of higher education have a special obligation to encourage and support the free expression of ideas, values, and opinions, even where they may be unpopular or controversial,” the Aug. 22 email reads.

    Long Beach State has seen success in the past with sports like baseball, basketball and volleyball, pushing the school into the public eye during playoff runs. But one of the United States’ most popular sports, football, CSULB no longer hosts. From 1955 to 1991, CSULB had a football team. The university used the Veterans Memorial Stadium of Long Beach City College to play most of its games, as well as Angel Stadium from 1977 to 1982.

    The price of parking at Long Beach State has long been a contested issue, starting in 1959 when students were furious about having to pay $13 per semester for parking, approximately $134 when adjusted for inflation. Current students were grateful to hear when the campus initiated a “” that would keep parking prices the same for 2023-2024 as they were for 2022-2023. This would keep the cost for commuters at $250 per semester and $300 per semester for on-campus residents.

El Vaquero sat down with Hoover Zariani, the head of the Multicultural and Community Engagement Center at Glendale College, and they discussed some of the tools the Pride Center offers as well as how it can grow. The Pride Center hosts workshops open to faculty, students, and staff each semester.

The event was part of the Humanities/Social Science Lecture Series, and organized by Women’s Studies professor Michelle Stonis.
