Some Metro Vancouver tenants were recently successful in getting the B.C. Supreme Court to cancel their eviction over smoking on their unit’s private deck. The tenants have been living in a fourplex with three other units for the past eight years, but in 2021, the property was sold, and they got a new landlord. They argued that the new landlord was racially discriminatory and tried multiple times to evict them to charge a higher rental rate for the unit.

B.C. designates Good Friday (April 18) as a statutory holiday. Some employers may also give workers Easter Monday (April 21) off, but it’s not mandatory. Employees who qualify for statutory holiday pay will get paid a regular day’s wage even though they get the day off.
Major Surrey road closed due to gas leak

A gas leak forced the closure of a section of King George Boulevard in Surrey as the Thursday afternoon rush hour began. FortisBC confirmed damage to a gas main line was caused by an “external party” Thursday. Crews were on site to repair it, but King George Boulevard had to be closed from 78th Avenue to 80th Avenue. Crews are onsite in #SurreyBC repairing damage to a gas main line caused by an external party.

A small dog who was found injured inside a garbage can in Pacific Spirit Park last week is recovering well and has found a loving forever home. Oscar the poodle had surgery this week on his front leg and hip, and is going home with animal rescue volunteer Laurie Schildt. “I’m just in love,” she told Daily Hive. “The way he looks at me since I’ve had him… his eyes and his personality. And his story. Being left in there and being discarded like nothing. To see how resilient he is and trusting.

Police say the chaos started with a tractor-trailer that didn’t slow down in time and struck multiple other cars. A Tesla also didn’t stop in time and hit the tractor-trailer from behind. It’s the third collision in that spot since Friday.

A couple out for an evening walk were shocked to find an injured dog in a garbage can and are working to get the animal help while questioning how it got there. Terry Sparrow was walking with fiance Krista Brisk Wednesday evening through Camosun Bog when they made the troubling discovery. The couple lost their own dog, Reggie, suddenly a few months ago. They’ve taken to going on walks through their pet’s favourite places to remember him.
