REFLECTMost people seek spiritual direction for a set period, perhaps six months or a year. I have been with Kathi (my spiritual director) for twelve years. In my defense, it’s been quite the twelve years. So much of the spiritual fruit in my life has happened between our visits together. Because of her prayers and guidance, I joined the music ministry at church and published a collection of spiritual poetry—although those were not the reasons I sought her out.

Published: 2024-09-22 Toil, both physical & emotional, can be one of the most rewarding elements of existence. It presents a beautiful dichotomy of pain & delight that cannot be found in many aspects of daily life. It is through toil that we become deeply intimate with the frailty of our frame. Hello, Poetry FriendMy husband texted me a photo of a painting that is a mosaic of small paintings, each square done by a student at St. Mary’s School. The painting is of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, my church home. “Zoom in and look close,” John texted. “Is that a crow?” I replied. “I don’t see the bird,” he said. Do you see it? I always see the bird. Or the strange detail in the corner. Or the shift in color. Careful reading teaches careful seeing.

Over at Poetry for Life, we’ve been pairing poems with things or people that mean a lot to us. I mention the friend who gave me Carroll’s collection Habitation of Wonder, when I was in need of a poetry pick-me-up. The poem “What Men Die For Lack Of” is composed of lines from other poems. I decided to write my own poem, using lines or parts of lines or mashups of lines from poems I’ve learned by heart over the last several months. A few words brings it all back.
