An estimated 1%–4% of global annual plastic production (approximately 10 million tons) enters the ocean (Borrelle et al., 2020; Wei et al., 2023). Plastics less than 5 mm in length are referred to as microplastics (MPs), which readily enter river and coastal waters, e.g., from runoff or via the wastewater network (Klein et al., 2015; Murphy et al., 2016; Okoffo et al., 2019).

Our study is a subsample of the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort, which is a large and dynamic prospective cohort for long-term study of genetic and lifestyle determinants of chronic diseases of Chinese adults. Details on the rationale and design of the study have been presented previously [24].
