The House of Commons Library has today updated its research briefing examining the financial (minimum income) requirement for UK partner visas. The minimum income requirement mandates that British citizens or permanent residents must demonstrate an annual income of at least £29,000 to sponsor a foreign spouse or partner.

There will be a Westminster Hall debate on the deportation of foreign national offenders on 7 February 2024, led by Rachel Maclean MP. The Home Secretary has a duty to make a deportation order in respect of non-British or Irish citizens who have been convicted of an offence in the UK and sentenced to at least 12 months’ imprisonment, unless certain exceptions apply. He also has discretionary powers to deport non-British citizens if he considers it to be “conducive to the public good”.

On 4 December 2023 the Home Secretary, James Cleverly, announced future changes to visa rules in what he described as a “five-point plan” to reduce immigration. The Home Office released more information on 21 December, including some adjustments to what had initially been announced.
