BUFFALO, N.Y. — It has been more than five years since Dr. Alison Waclawek of North Buffalo passed away from a rare condition during childbirth. The foundation formed in her memory is holding a blood drive Saturday, Feb. 22 to keep her legacy alive. Waclawek, a pharmacist who lived in North Buffalo with her husband Justin, died from an Amniotic Fluid Embolism (AFE) during the birth of her first child in 2019. Her daughter Ada survived.

AMHERST, N.Y. — Lynda Marino, a wife and mother of two from East Amherst, is a survivor. "I don't look like I'm the face of someone with heart disease," she said. Marino, 44, was diagnosed with a genetic heart defect, cardiomyopathy, shortly after graduating college. She lived symptom free all her life, until one fateful day in September 2015. She went into sudden cardiac arrest while driving on Transit Road in Lockport with her then 2-year-old in the car.

For 50 of those years, one man has played an intregral role in the agency, and in turn, has helped hundreds of thousands of patients. "It's been an honor and privilege to be here. It's been a dream job for me," said Joseph Sonnenberg, BHSC vice president. Sonnenberg started at the agency as a speech and language pathologist in 1973. There were only 17 employees at the time. Now there are 500.
