I saw the first fireflies of the season last night, illuminating my path as I walked my dog, Scout, around the neighborhood. Each time one lit up in front of me, it was like a little jolt of serotonin or maybe it was simply an infusion of wonder and awe into my soul. And I was reminded of Kirsten Luce’s truly magical picture from years ago, of thousands of fireflies in a forest on the outskirts of a tiny Mexican town.

I was in Florida for a few days last week working on a travel piece and exploring Citrus County, which is about 2 hrs north of where I used to live in St. Pete, and where I sadly haven’t spent nearly enough time. It’s stunningly gorgeous. I got to spend time on the water, hiking and biking some trails, and seeing all sorts of wildlife (manatees! alligators! an eagle! a hippo!).

An explosion of so-called hyperscale data centers in places such as Northern Virginia has upended plans by electric utilities to cut the use of fossil fuels. In some areas, that means burning coal for longer than planned.
