SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Students across San Diego County are preparing for the 54th annual San Diego County Scripps Regional Spelling Bee, which takes place at 9 a.m. this Thursday. More than 90 sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students will compete for the chance to participate in the National Scripps Spelling Bee competition. The regional bee will be emceed by ABC 10News anchors Jared Aarons and Melissa Mecija. To reach the county-level competition, each student had to win their school's spelling bee.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Commission on Police Practices will meet Wednesday afternoon to take a closer look at the tough question of when a police chase becomes more dangerous than the person officers are trying to arrest. The commission has outlined nine recommendations for revising the San Diego Police Department's vehicle pursuit policy to improve public and officer safety.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Joseph Drury never knew his father. He said his biological dad left his mother when she was five months pregnant and on welfare. At the age of nine, his mother enrolled him in Big Brothers Big Sisters. “It was really tough for us growing up, and so she put me into the program specifically to try to have that male role model,” said Drury, who is now a business owner in the North County. Drury said his mentor became a lifelong friend and was even in his wedding when he got married.

Students with disabilities in the school's Transitions Program run the Monty's Market store to help prepare them for life after high school. BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) —  A year ago, Sweetwater Farms in Bonita was one of the many businesses submerged in water during the historic flooding on Jan. 22. It has been a long road to recovery, according to owner Roberta Jackson. “We just really didn't know how we were going to do it, but we had so much help from the community,” Jackson said. The flooding caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage. One of the biggest costs was the footing for the horses, which is the sand that horses walk and run on.
