I’m also a taxpayer, and I’ve been a registered Republican since I was old enough to vote. These political boxes make me the ideal demographic for some candidates this election season. The campaign texts, emails and flyers in the mail certainly suggest this. One text from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s campaign even went as far to say, “You’re my only hope.”But not so fast.

It’s dusk along the St. Mary’s strip, the end of another brutally hot day in July. Most of the businesses have closed here, which means it’s time for the feral felines of all ages to venture out. They are drawn to the strip because employees at restaurants and other businesses leave out water and food. The cats are skittish, always on guard. They belong to no one, and they scurry away at any sign of trouble. Monica Caballero, however, is a familiar face to these neighborhood cats.

San Antonio Police remove firearms from the trunks and rear of vehicles at a drive-thru gun buyback organized by San Antonio City Council member John Courage on Nov 19. Gun owners received an H-E-B gift card for each of up to 20 firearms they turn in -- $50 for a nonfunctioning or homemade weapon, $150 for a rifle or shotgun, $200 for a handgun, and $300 for a semi-automatic rifle.
