If you’re living in Chicago, it may seem like everyone you know is sick. And while it’s not quite everyone, the Chicago area and the nation are facing a serious spike in flu cases. This flu season could be the most intense in 15 years, according to the percentage of doctors’ visits for flu-like symptoms, which can indicate the severity of the virus’ spread.

Bird flu — also known as avian influenza or H5N1 — has been spreading among animals in Illinois. This week, hundreds of ducks were found dead along Lake Michigan. So far, there have been no reported human bird flu cases in Illinois. Across the U.S., there have been 67 human cases and one death reported. Experts told NPR the risk to the general public is low and almost all human cases can be traced to close contact with infected birds or cattle.

Federal law enforcement took a decade to build their case against Madigan, one of the most powerful politicians in Illinois and the longest-serving House speaker in American history.
