Friday the 13th marked the opening of Scoop’s Scoopz: Worcester’s newest ice cream shop. Located at 807 Pleasant St., Scoop’s Scoopz is the brainchild of Vaughn Slowaski, the owner of the city’s now-shuttered ScoopDrip sneaker store. ScoopDrip closed its doors at 140 Millbury St. at the end of 2024, with Slowaski citing the area’s decline as the reason he closed up shop. But the decision wasn’t necessarily all bad.

UMass Chan Medical School has named Patrick Gallagher as the Worcester university’s new chief human resources officer. Gallagher will assume his role as deputy executive vice chancellor, people strategy on June 30, according to a Tuesday press release from UMass Chan.

When an under or uninsured Massachusetts resident requires certain medical treatments, such as many in radiology, psychiatry, or rehabilitation, the cost of their care often falls to the state’s Health Safety Net. The fund serves to reimburse community health centers and acute care hospitals for specific essential services for those under and uninsured, including for those whose services aren’t covered by Medicaid. But what happens when that funding falls short?

Dr. Michael Collins, the longest-serving chancellor of UMass Chan Medical School, will step down from his role leading the Worcester institution at the end of the 2025-2026 academic school year. Collins announced his future departure in a letter to the UMass Chan community Tuesday. “I don't know if it's ever a good time to step down when you have a great position,” Collins said in an interview with WBJ.
