The 2023 vintage in Burgundy has the reputation of producing forward or “approachable” wines that are ready to drink. Don’t be fooled. Can Sumoi is a relatively new, still wine project from the famed Raventós i Blanc sparkling wine producer, which dates all the way back to 1497. Pepe Raventós, the current head of the family-run company, explains that this fine rosé is a blend of Sumoll, an indigenous red grape, and Xarel-lo. Pepe believes that Sumoll, a native red grape abandoned in place of high yielding varieties for Cava, is an ideal variety for coping with climate change because it likes heat and is resistant to drought.

One of the joys of coming to Japan in general and Tokyo in particular is to learn about these beverages and how they pair with Japanese cuisine.
