WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — The Saharan Air Layer (SAL) currently shows up on satellite imagery out across the eastern and central Atlantic Ocean. It's the brown and purple shading you see. The Saharan Air Layer is typically found in the Atlantic from late spring into early fall. It's located 1 mile or more above the ground. Saharan dust is known to limit tropical development and sometimes our local thunderstorms. The scattered light produces vivid sunrise and sunsets.
