WASHINGTON — The late retired Justice David H. Souter’s time on the Supreme Court has become paradigmatic of profound change on the court, as his 19-year tenure straddled an era of increasing polarization in the nation’s politics and helped shape the modern era of judicial confirmations. Souter, who passed away Thursday at his home in New Hampshire according to a Supreme Court announcement, retired from the high court in 2009 and the vacancy was filled by current Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

WASHINGTON - A federal court ruling in Alabama could mean another new congressional map for the state, as a panel of federal judges found the version the state drew in 2023 violated the Voting Rights Act because it diluted the political voice of Black voters. The more than 500-page ruling from a unanimous three-judge panel said it was "not a close call" to require the state to have a map with more representation for Black voters than the 2023 plan. WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump said Thursday he would pull Ed Martin's nomination to be U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia and would soon announce a replacement for the embattled pick. The shift comes after a monthslong fight in the Senate to confirm Martin, who currently serves in the role on a temporary basis. Earlier this week, Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., a key vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he would oppose Martin's confirmation to the post.
