On Sunday, the Worcester Telegram & Gazette will feature a commemorative edition celebrating the Boston Celtics' record 18th NBA championship victory. The newspaper will include a special full-page cover and back page honoring the team. The regular front page, and full Sunday newspaper, will be inside. Subscribers will receive the commemorative edition with their usual newspaper delivery; nonsubscribers can pick up their copy at local retail stores.

Public discussion and civil debate are crucial to our society.  And we need feedback from our readers to do our jobs effectively. For years, one way that we've solicited your feedback has been the ability to make comments on news articles that appear online. We've long known that comment sections across the internet can quickly devolve when they’re left unmonitored, so we've involved editors from the newsroom in moderating the discussion to help provide a better experience.

Welcome to the Telegram & Gazette's first Student of the Week poll. The poll will run each week until the end of the school year, with the exception of vacation weeks. Nominations are submitted by principals, guidance counselors and teachers at high schools in Central Massachusetts. Voting will continue through noon Thursday. One of the most important things that a local newspaper can do is provide fair and comprehensive coverage of local elections. Tuesday is Election Day in Worcester, with voters set to choose a mayor, 11 members of the City Council and eight members of a newly constituted School Committee (the mayor will be the ninth member of the School Committee). Our Election Day coverage won't quite be all-hands-on-deck, but we will have seven staff reporters covering particular aspects of the city election.

A local newspaper has many important functions, but nothing is as important as fulfilling its watchdog role, making sure that public institutions are accountable to taxpayers, that public information is indeed made public. It's also the most difficult thing a news organization, and especially an individual reporter, can do. On many difficult and complex stories, there are powerful interests who would prefer that the truth remain hidden.
