MOORHEAD — Clay County officials are bracing for potential impacts as state lawmakers work to finalize a budget for Minnesota. Gov. Tim Walz’ proposed budget includes cuts to the state’s Health and Human Services division. Some of those proposed cuts could lead to service gaps that counties, including Clay County, would have to pay for. That could result in a higher mill levy, which would mean higher property taxes for residents.

DETROIT LAKES — Summer is fast approaching in lakes country, and crews are already hard at work getting docks back in the water. TS Dock and Lift Services was out on Big Detroit Lake on April 16 — several days ahead of the lake’s typical ice-out date of April 20. For the second year in a row, crews are starting early despite chilly water temperatures and occasional rain. While the work can be physically demanding, the crew remains upbeat.

FARGO — Spring cleanup is underway, and the city of Fargo is reminding residents to use compost containers properly at recycling drop sites. The city has compost containers available to the public at 12 of its recycling locations. Residents can use the containers to dispose of yard waste such as grass clippings, leaves, and fruit and vegetable scraps. However, city officials stress that branches and plastic bags should not be placed in compost bins.

HILLSBORO, N.D. — Voters in Hillsboro will head to the polls Tuesday, April 22, to decide whether to approve a 12-mill increase for the Hillsboro Public School District. The referendum was proposed after the district faced a $500,000 budget shortfall earlier this year, largely due to declining enrollment. That prompted the School Board to make several cost-cutting decisions in January , reducing the budget by $370,000.
