The victim of a horrific fatal stabbing in Cork is a convicted killer who previously battled homelessness and addiction issues. The Irish Mirror has learned that Daniel ‘Dan’ O’Sullivan, 31, who pals say had turned his life around since being convicted of manslaughter in 2015, died in Cork University Hospital after he had been stabbed in the stomach outside a pub on the North Main Street of Youghal shortly before 10pm on Monday night.

The Defence Forces’ elite fighting unit is to get a new €46 million base, it has emerged. The Mirror has learned that Tánaiste Simon Harris, who is also Minister for Defence as well as Foreign Affairs, is set to seek cabinet approval for a new headquarters and training centre for the Army Ranger Wing – The Defence Forces’ special forces unit. The new HQ will be located where its current base is – the Curragh Camp in Co Kildare.

The size of the Garda Siochana could plummet by up to 2,000 members – despite a massive government recruitment campaign, a union leader has warned. Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan says gardai have given him no indication that they believe missing Kerry farmer Michael Gaine has been murdered. “The gardai have not indicated that to me as of yet,” he said when asked on Monday afternoon if gardai had told him if they believed the man had been murdered.
