Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has revealed that claims made by some politicians under Dail privilege about gardai strip searching women arrested outside Leinster House are “false”, Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said yesterday. “Politicians, in my opinion, should reflect on that before standing up in Dail Eireann to make very serious allegations about identifiable gardai,” Mr O’Callaghan told the annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors.

Gardai have no leads in the case of missing Kerry farmer Michael Gaine – almost four weeks after he vanished, Commissioner Drew Harris has said. Speaking in Killarney, Co Kerry, Mr Harris replied “No leads” when asked if officers probing the March 20th disappearance of Mr Gaine, 56, near Kenmare had any. And he also revealed that the disappearance of Mr Gaine, who lived just outside the Co Kerry town, was still being treated as a missing person case.
