Luzerne County Council is considering a no-interest loan of $500,000 to the city of Wilkes-Barre for sewer repairs. Wilkes-Barre’s “sewer system is in dire need of repairs,” according to a proposed resolution that would authorize the loan. Council is scheduled to vote on the resolution at Tuesday’s meeting. The city would have five years to pay the loan back to the county at $8,333 a month, County Budget & Finance Division Head Mary Roselle told council during a work session on June 10.

WYOMING — Around eight years ago, Beth DeNardi, the Luzerne County director of solid waste & recycling management, came up with an idea on where to locate her office. The location of her office had been bouncing around the county in various buildings over the years. Her idea was to renovate an old county building in Wyoming by the county airport and make it eco-friendly and energy efficient.

A lawsuit alleging a scheme to redirect a Luzerne County allocation of $581,037 in opioid settlement funds is "an abuse of civil process," defamatory and sanctionable, the defendants' attorney asserted in a letter to the plaintiff's attorneys. Attorney Brendan N. Fitzgerald demanded the immediate withdrawal of the suit filed June 13 in the Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas.

The district attorney and county controller would also be prohibited from serving more than three consecutive terms, but the reset remains for those elected offices in the proposal to revise the charter.
