Many Australians follow American politics and trends. We have a lot in common and are allies. We also relish our rivalry, witness this year’s Olympic swimming events. Like you, we experienced a spike in cost-of-living pressure, interest rates and inflation, driven by supply chain disruption from COVID-19 and war. And, the governments of all advanced economies face the same grievances — including concerns about the immigrants and other recent arrivals on our shores.

Wednesday afternoons, we put the paper to bed. It was a family affair: My siblings and I, along with several other local teenagers, were drafted to insert the various inside sections — sports, advertising circulars — into the front section to create The Sampsonian, a weekly that my father co-owned in Clinton until he retired in 1986.

Some claim that the Coastal Plain begins east of I-95, but for those of us who grew up there, the boundary is less clear. You might say that there is no physical demarcation, only an emotional one. Landscape exists as much within us as without, so the sight of flat fields curving slightly toward a line of pine forest can trigger an emotional reaction that is just as valid as what passes outside the windshield in letting you know that you’re home.
