1 IntroductionThe ability of cells to modify their volume in reaction to osmotic disturbances is crucial for fundamental physiological processes like growth, migration, and apoptosis (Lang et al., 1998; Hoffmann et al., 2009). Transport proteins facilitate the alterations in cellular volume by allowing the influx or efflux of inorganic ions and larger organic osmolytes, which is accompanied by a flow of water driven by osmosis.
