2. Assumptions and model. Our goal is to derive a simple relation that can explain the observed cell geometries in the transition regions of naturally constructed comb, i.e., how many non-hexagonal cells to expect along a transition line between worker and reproductive cells (Fig 4A–4C). This relation is then used to predict the number of expected non-hexagonal cells for all species, whether or not they use layers of intermediate sized cells.
