We used to consider Memorial Day weekend to be the first big holiday of the summer season for Galveston. These days, it’s harder to say when things are going to start jumping on island beaches. Any nice day, it seems, can bring droves of people to the beach and the water. Perhaps tourist season, like hurricane season, is beginning earlier these days. So, with the long Easter weekend at hand and nice weather in the forecast, it’s a good time to review ways to stay safe in the Gulf of Mexico.

Based on about 25 years of experience and observation, every good thing people say about Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis is true. He’s a dedicated, innovative first-responder who directly and indirectly has saved probably hundreds of lives in the waters around here. Some of the programs he developed helped to mold a few generations of young Galvestonians into better people and citizens.

It’s spring in Texas. Although we haven’t had many this year, that usually means some beautiful crystalline blue days; weather as near perfect as weather ever is. It means bluebonnets, baseball and barbecue. And around here, it means the Galveston County Fair & Rodeo, an event as Texan as events can be. This venerable community production, now in its 87th year, got underway with a sneak peek Thursday and runs through April 22 at Jack Brooks Park, just off state Highway 6 in Hitchcock.

Civic-minded people in League City should be pleased about and proud of the community response to the sudden vacancy in council Position 5. That was the most City Secretary Diana Stapp has seen file for a single position in her 22 years with the city, she said. It was a sign of civic health and engagement and it offers an opportunity to acknowledge how fortunate we are that people with busy lives are still willing to stand up and serve.
