Abigail Shrier’s wildly popular new book, Bad Therapy, is one of the latest takes on the causes of the mental health crisis occurring among youth. Shrier’s diagnosis is that society’s obsession over kids’ feelings undermines their development, hindering their ability to manage the vicissitudes of life. This problem, she says, is largely due to contemporary approaches to psychotherapy, parenting, and schooling.

The well-documented and increasing polarization in our society has had a decidedly negative impact on civil discourse. This divisiveness diminishes our capacity to understand and address some of today’s most complex problems. The university, which has traditionally embraced dialogue across differences, is struggling to engage and promote the practices of civil discourse. A recent exchange between two Yale faculty groups illustrates these struggles clearly.

Our family has two cats, and I’ve often found myself wondering what it’s like to be them. I imagined them driven by a host of competing innate instincts—desire for food, affection, sleep, etc.—and ultimately following the ones that are the strongest in the moment. Humans, on the other hand, can intentionally regulate and suppress instincts that we find unproductive or harmful.
