    1 INTRODUCTION In an authoritative overview published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2022, Emanuel, Upshur and Maxwell explore the example of COVID-19 to highlight how ethics and medical policy-making are intrinsically linked; they emphasise the necessity of including ethical analysis when making medical decisions.1 Their work suggests an opportunity to similarly interrogate the role of ethical evaluation in other individual clinical scenarios.
