Over 600 new hires attended the Dallas Independent School District’s New Teacher Academy this week. The event, hosted at the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Downtown Dallas, kicked off the school year with a resource fair, teacher training, and other activities to welcome new teachers before classes begin on August 12. Campus orientations were held on Monday.

The Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District has beefed up its cell phone policy to limit classroom disruptions. Monday night, the GCISD school board unanimously voted on a new, stricter cell phone policy that would fine repeat offenders $15. The changes will come into effect this next school year; however, the new rules differ for the district’s elementary, middle, and high school students.

Inconsistent sleep at night could lead to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, a new study shows. American and British researchers used UK Biobank data to glean important insight into how sleeping patterns might impact one’s propensity for type 2 diabetes. Their findings recently appeared in Diabetes Care, a publication from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body no longer correctly regulates and uses sugar as a fuel.

A new ranking of school systems in the United States shines a light on Texas’ subpar academics. WalletHub recently published an analysis of school systems across the country. Using 32 key metrics, an overall ranking was established, plus two others focusing specifically on quality and safety. Massachusetts came out on top, followed by Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, and Wisconsin.

The Colony has taken a page from Hollywood to entice recruits to join its police force. A new series of trailers crafted by a video production company owned by a former police officer from The Colony is showing online and at Galaxy Theatres. It was paid for using the funds seized during drug busts. The video spots hope to drum up interest among viewers in joining the Colony Police Department, which, like many other agencies in the country, needs more officers.
