On April 15, 2023, fighting broke out in Khartoum, Sudan's capital, between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo. The two generals had, since 2021, jointly run the country after a military coup d'état pushed out the transitional government, which itself was created following pro-democracy protests in 2019.
