The FTSE 100 dropped as tanking Bunzl (BNZL) shares overshadowed softer inflation figures that should pave the way for the Bank of England to cut rates. The main market shed 0.68%, or 56 points, to trade at 8,192 after inflation fell to 2.6% over the year to March, marking the second month in a row that prices have eased. Nevertheless, inflation remains above the Bank’s 2% target.

MPS provider Tatton Asset Management reported a record net inflow of £3.6bn as its chair Roger Cornick announced his retirement. In a trading update the wealth firm said net flows rose 60% in the 12 months to the end of March 2025 compared to the previous year. It recorded an average monthly net inflow of £307m throughout the year. This pushed the firm’s assets under management (AUM) up by 24%, to stand at £21.1bn at the end of March. Tatton has said it wants to hit £30bn by 2029.

The board of The European Smaller Companies Trust (ESCT) has agreed to tender up to 42.5% of the listed fund’s shares, following two months of negotiations with activist investor Saba Capital. The tender offer will comprise a cash exit option as well as an ‘in specie consideration option’, whereby professional investors can opt to receive a proportion of the fund’s underlying portfolio instead, according to an announcement today.
