Nothing attracts more comments about transportation than discussing the zipper merge. Drivers either love it or hate it. However, traffic engineers agree it is the best and safest way to merge in certain situations, primarily when losing a lane for construction. I want to know if drivers are getting any better at it. There has been some success with the zipper merges in Everett and on Highway 8. I have found myself being cut off less lately as I use the open lane approaching zipper merges.

The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission has ruled to keep gray wolves in Washington on the state’s endangered species list. The pair of close pair of 5-4 votes which took place last week, ends more than a year of sometimes bitter fighting between both sides of the controversial issue. Downgrading the wolf’s status from “endangered” to “sensitive” would have lessened protections for the state’s 260 wolves currently in place, including lesser penalties for poaching.
Former Seattle mayor Charley Royer dies at 84

Charley Royer, Seattle’s longest-serving mayor, has died at age 84. Royer was Seattle’s 48th and longest serving mayor. He decided that the city would recognize domestic partnerships well before others and provided city benefits to those families. Royer was born in Medford, OR in 1939. He joined the Army in 1961 and after leaving the Army studied Journalism at the University of Oregon.
Pilot killed in tanker plane crash in Oregon wildfire

A tanker plane that disappeared in eastern Oregon while fighting one of the many wildfires spreading across several Western states has been found, and the pilot on board is dead, authorities said Friday. A Grant County Search and Rescue team located the aircraft Friday morning and confirmed the death, said Lisa Clark, a Bureau of Land Management information officer for the Falls Fire.
