AVONThe ball had exited Mae Munson’s right hand only a split second earlier, and, already, she knew. On a Tuesday night that drove home the point that defense does win championships, Munson’s frozen rope from center field was the gem that shone brightest in Center Grove’s hard-fought 1-0 Class 4A regional win at Avon.

The running joke between Franklin pitchers Braeden Burton and Greyson Betts centers around top billing. Instead of trying to hoard the distinction of being their team’s undisputed ace, they volley it like a couple of tennis players. “We go back and forth about this,” said Burton, a senior right-hander who is 4-1 this season with a 1.06 earned-run average. “When you look at it, we have two No. 1 pitchers. We’re really good friends.

INDIANAPOLISThose in attendance for Saturday’s second semifinal match at Perry Meridian won’t soon forget the manner in which it started. Three-time defending state champion Roncalli was out of sorts, in large part because Franklin was out of its mind. Five kills and a pair of blocks from senior outside hitter Chase Alyea propelled the Grizzly Cubs to a 12-5 lead, sending the fans on the south end of the gymnasium into a frenzy.

SHELBYVILLEBoys representing the seven Johnson County teams had next week’s Plainfield Regional in their sights, but there was work to be done. Center Grove and Whiteland apparently received the memo, placing first and second in the final team standings with 170 and 117 points, respectively. It’s the 20th time a Trojan team has secured the title, including two straight under coach Brad Timmons.
