Emma Gardner wasn’t setting her personal bar particularly high prior to the state meet. Seeded sixth in the discus based on her best throw at the Ben Davis Regional 11 days earlier, the Greenwood senior figured a sixth-place medal would be worthy of celebration. Anything better was simply gravy. Imagine the look on Gardner’s face when her new school-record toss of 152 feet, 7 inches put her in the lead and kept her there for the duration of the competition.

Regardless of how Will Riley’s career plays out, he’ll forever run shoulder to shoulder with the best sprinters this state has produced. In the second-to-last race of his high school career, Riley, a Greenwood senior, won the 100-meter dash in 10.40 seconds at the state meet, a feat that places his name in conversations with legends. Clyde Peach … Jerome Harrison … Fast company indeed.

CARMEL — The annual Boys Golf State Finals might be the ultimate stage, but from the course to the crowds, everything was to Austin Perry’s liking. Tuesday, the Columbus North sophomore made his way around Prairie View Golf Club, his finals debut concluding with a first-round score of 79. This places Perry in a six-way tie for 51st-place among the 108 players competing. Qualified as an individual, Perry attempts to fare even better in Wednesday’s final round.

Boys volleyball broke new ground in Indiana this season and, not coincidentally, so did Franklin outside hitter Chase Alyea. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound outside hitter helped usher in the sport’s IHSAA-sanctioned era by powering his way to 466 kills on his way to being named Player of the Year for the Daily Journal’s inaugural All-County team.
